Kaplan = Qaplan
Most Kaplans (or even Caplans) have a Hebrew spelling of קפלן.
You probably know there are two "K" sounds in Hebrew, ק and כ. The Hebrew letter כ is usually transliterated as a K, while the ק is transliterated as a Q. Some of this has to do with ensuring that the word is written back in Hebrew the correct way. The other is than in Sephardic pronunciation, they're every so slightly different. So, if we transliterate קפלן properly we get Qaplan.
I urge all my fellow Kaplans and Caplans to spell our name properly, Qaplan!
